Physical Education

Curriculum Intent

At Grundisburgh Primary school it is our intention that every pupil, irrelevant of needs, develops an enjoyment and love for Physical Education and sport and that they embrace the many sporting opportunities on offer at Grundisburgh. We wish for every pupil to leave us desiring to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.

We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to achieve and develop in physical activities and wellbeing. We want children to learn to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding the values of fairness and respect. We want to inspire all pupils to succeed in competitive sport and other physically demanding opportunities, through increasing control and co-ordination of physical skills. We believe in providing lots of opportunity for our learners which support their health and fitness; in curriculum time, though extra-curricular activities and through further enrichment opportunities and experiences. We want all of our pupils to lead healthy, active lives, provide enjoyment in Physical Education and embed this at a young age. At Grundisburgh Primary School we know that children learn best when the curriculum is well sequenced to enable revisiting of core knowledge, skills and understanding to deepen conceptual awareness before demanding application across the whole curriculum. We ensure that key kills are developed, revisited, assessed and built upon during EYFS to Year 6 to ensure Physical Literacy.

Curriculum Implementation

All classes participate in 2 hours of National Curriculum PE per week. This is further enhanced still with extra-curricular opportunities, daily exercise opportunities and Forest School sessions.

Our pupils participate in high quality PE and sporting activities. The school aims to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events and friendly matches. We also ensure every child has the opportunity for extra physical activity during the school day, often encompassing this with achieving personal best. Our Year 4-5 swim at the Clopton pool for one term each year. Our inclusive approach endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being, commitment and a strong growth mindset. We are committed to using the PE and Sport’s Premium Funding to enhance the quality of teaching and increase the opportunities for children to be active. We use the Sports Premium in various ways but one area we value is up-skilling our teachers to ensure sustainability should the Sports Premium cease. We ensure that the curriculum is largely delivered by teachers, and they work alongside professionals and specific coaches in certain areas to develop even higher quality teaching. We employ a specialist Dance teacher who works alongside our current teaching staff. Dance at Grundisburgh is taught in a cross-curricular approach; taught through the medium of books or topics a class is studying. Work is celebrated through our annual Autumn Showcase. The theme this year is Light.

Curriculum Impact

The school offers a broad range of extra-curricular provision including; Netball, Nimble Nippers, Running and Football. We include children and parents in the decision of which clubs we offer to enable us to offer clubs that fit current interests. In the past this has included Handball, Gymnastics, Fencing, and Archery. Participation in PE lessons is 100%. No child is left unable to access the curriculum and additional measures are put in place, where needed. The children show a good understanding of health, fitness and healthy eating. Through teaching and learning, children have improved their understanding of what it means to lead a healthy lifestyle. All children have the opportunity at some point in their schooling to feel valued and represent the school team for one of the many inter-school tournaments that we attend; Football, Basketball, Dodgeball, Running, Athletics and Cricket. Children may also represent the school as part of the PE Crew. Children will enjoy sport and will seek additional extra-curricular activities both in school and outside of school upon leaving us, therefore helping to ensure active lives as teenagers as they move on to the next phase in their schooling. 100% of year 6 children in 2024 leaving Grundisburgh could swim 25m competently and perform safe self resuce.

Children will make links between their mental well-being and their participation in sport. They will link this to their learning through RSHE and the school’s emphasis on Mindfulness and Wellbeing through adoption of the THRIVE approach. The children will be able to choose to lead happy, healthy lives having been given solid foundations at Grundisburgh Primary School.
